SUMMARY:Nature Photography Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, February 24 & March 2\, at 2pm \nParticipants in the workshops will learn more about wildlife and landscape photography from photographer Mark Lindhult\, who leads the Quabbin Photo Group. The first session will focus on technique during a lecture format and the second session will meet at the library before heading outside to practice using the techniques in the first session. The Belchertown Wildlife & Landscape Photography program is an intergenerational opportunity to participate in learning\, exploration\, and expression. It’s a partnership between the Clapp Memorial Library\, Town of Belchertown Planning Department\, and Town of Belchertown Conservation Commission. Meet other local photographers while learning new skills\, build a portfolio of work\, and then submit your top photos to the photo contest.

SUMMARY:The Rabbit Run Railroad: An Art and History Project
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, April 16 at 7pm at the Clapp Memorial Library\, Ken Levine of Petersham\, an artist and railroad fan will present a program about the Rabbit Run Railroad\, his creation of a 24’ diorama at the Swift River Valley Historical Society in North New Salem\, and a brief history of the era of steam railroads in America. \nThe 4 Lost Towns that the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir required removal of were the inspiration for this memorial to those communities who were forced to relocate in the early 20th century. Using archival photos from the archives of the MDC and other sources\, Ken spent over 5 years creating a miniature recreation of the Swift River Valley\, its towns\, farms\, industries and landscape\, including working HO model trains of the steam era\, 1871-1930\, the Rabbit Railroad. As the train journeys from South Athol to Enfield the seasons unfold and the various towns go about their business. In a brief video using Go-Pro mini cams on the trains you are actually aboard the train as it winds its way along the Swift River\, which completes the illusion of riding the Rabbit. \nA NBC Boston Affiliate interviewed Ken for a movie\, The Scar which was shown on TV and relates the story of the Quabbin and the Swift River Valley and the Lost Towns. Also\, the SRVHS Facebook page has the video of the diorama and other information about the history of the Quabbin Reservoir. \nProgram made possible by the Friends of the Clapp Memorial Library

DESCRIPTION:A unique perspective on the works of Edgar Allen Poe\, Mary Shelley\, Washington Irving\, Emily Dickinson and others is coming to the Clapp Memorial Library through the marriage of original music\, shadow puppetry and cinematography and special effects.\nThe group\, known as Shadow\, Sound\, Spectacle\, will be performing Literary Monsters on Saturday\, September 13 at 4pm. The performance is a collaborative project of different pieces led by Northampton-based singer-songwriter Jess Martin\, Boston puppeteer Amy West and musician/visual artist Abby Hanna\, who is also Northampton-based. The production seeks to reimagine iconic gothic figures like Frankenstein’s creature\, Poe’s raven and the Headless Horseman\, as symbols of resistance\, transformation and queer identity. The event is free and open to the public. This program is funded by the Friends of the Clapp Memorial Library.

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to the Clapp Memorial Library on Tuesday\, February 24th from 6-7pm for an Art Exhibit Reception for Elizabeth Texeira’s Studio Art 3\, Studio Art 4\, and Honors Art Classes at Belchertown High School. The reception will celebrate the young artists’ work\, which will be on display in the library throughout the month of February. Light refreshments will be provided. This program is funded by the Friends of the Clapp Memorial Library.

Seats are limited\, and registration is required.  Click here to sign up. \nInstructor: Ed Comeau \nEd’s interest in photography goes back many years\, but upon moving to Belchertown over 25 years ago this interest reached a whole new level with his proximity to the Quabbin Reservoir and access to the beauty of Western Massachusetts. While he can often be found sitting in some remote part of the Quabbin\, waiting for wildlife to come his way\, has also explored Maine\, Alaska\, and Colorado\, resulting in a number of beautiful landscape and wildlife photographs. A number of local businesses have exhibited his works and his photographs have appeared in several calendars. He is a member of the Friends of the Quabbin Board of Directors\, the Program Director of the Quabbin Photo Group\, and has been an instructor for the Belchertown ViewFinder project since its inception. As a Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, a Principle Emeritus at The Berkshire Design Group and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects\, he brings his knowledge of landscape\, ecology\, design and composition to inform his photography and advocate for habitat preservation. His photographs have been exhibited at UMass Amherst in the Design Building Gallery\, the US Fish and Wildlife Headquarters Gallery\, Cooley Dickinson Hospital Gallery\, Franklin Medical Center Gallery and the Baystate Medical Center Gallery. He has also granted permission to several non-profit groups to use his photographs in newsletters\, reports\, note cards and postcards\, including the Friends of Quabbin\, the Massachusetts Rivers Alliance and the Kestrel Land Trust..
