On Wednesday\, September 16 at 4:30pm using the Wallace Lake Sensory Trails\, we will learn how to identify and prepare foods using common wild edibles that you can find near where you live. She will discuss flora and fungi characteristics for proper identification as well as meal and medicinal preparation. DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 8th at 7 p.m. at the Clapp Memorial Library in Belchertown\, MA\, for a special presentation of the new book No To Nuclear: Why Nuclear Power Destroys Lives\, Derails Climate Progress and Provokes War\, with author Linda Pentz Gunter. \nThe climate crisis is very clearly upon us. The nuclear power industry would like us to believe it is the answer. But who pays the price for that choice? \nNo To Nuclear blasts aside claims that nuclear power is safe\, green\, and affordable\, revealing a predatory and exploitative industry beneath the PR veneer. \nThe book not only makes the irresistible case that nuclear power is too slow\, too expensive\, too dangerous and too integrally connected to the nuclear weapons complex\, it also delves into the lives of Indigenous peoples and communities of color\, who have been harmed the most by the nuclear sector. \nAnd it questions whether the way we devalue nature\, the environment and the other animals with whom we share this planet\, is costing us the chance of a genuinely just energy transition. \nLinda Pentz Gunter is the founder of the US-based non-profit Beyond Nuclear and serves as its Executive Director. She also launched and writes for her organization’s news platform\, Beyond Nuclear International. A former journalist with Reuters\, she currently writes for the Morning Star (UK) and Ralph Nader’s Capitol Hill Citizen.

For much of her life\, Poet Emily Dickinson corresponded with Belchertown’s own J.G. Holland and his wife\, sharing the intimate moments of their lives through language—currents of the 19th century\, recipes\, snippets of poems\, news of children\, the nature of friendship\, love\, art\, longing and grief. \nThe conversation between Emily and Dr. Holland brings to life the ideas\, humor and wisdom of the lifelong relationship between the poet who never married\, the traditional Victorian woman raising a family (Mrs. Holland) and her husband—the renowned writer of his day\, whose newspaper\, The Springfield Daily Republican\, printed the only poems Emily published in her lifetime. \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Belchertown Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.
