DESCRIPTION:Fall Foraging Walk\, 4:30-5:30pm \nGain greater food security by learning wild and feral edible and medicinal plants and fungi. On Wednesday\, September 16 at 4:30pm using the Wallace Lake Sensory Trails\, we will learn how to identify and prepare foods using common wild edibles that you can find near where you live. Join naturalist and wild edibles enthusiast Arianna Alexsandra Collins of Offerings for Community Building on our foraging walk. She will discuss flora and fungi characteristics for proper identification as well as meal and medicinal preparation. DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 8th at 7 p.m. at the Clapp Memorial Library in Belchertown\, MA\, for a special presentation of the new book No To Nuclear: Why Nuclear Power Destroys Lives\, Derails Climate Progress and Provokes War\, with author Linda Pentz Gunter. \nThe climate crisis is very clearly upon us. The nuclear power industry would like us to believe it is the answer. But who pays the price for that choice? \nNo To Nuclear blasts aside claims that nuclear power is safe\, green\, and affordable\, revealing a predatory and exploitative industry beneath the PR veneer. \nThe book not only makes the irresistible case that nuclear power is too slow\, too expensive\, too dangerous and too integrally connected to the nuclear weapons complex\, it also delves into the lives of Indigenous peoples and communities of color\, who have been harmed the most by the nuclear sector. \nAnd it questions whether the way we devalue nature\, the environment and the other animals with whom we share this planet\, is costing us the chance of a genuinely just energy transition. \nLinda Pentz Gunter is the founder of the US-based non-profit Beyond Nuclear and serves as its Executive Director. She also launched and writes for her organization’s news platform\, Beyond Nuclear International. A former journalist with Reuters\, she currently writes for the Morning Star (UK) and Ralph Nader’s Capitol Hill Citizen.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Clapp Memorial Library on Monday\, July 20 at 6pm for Emily & J.G.\, a lively conversation that will touch the heart. For much of her life\, Poet Emily Dickinson corresponded with Belchertown’s own J.G. Holland and his wife\, sharing the intimate moments of their lives through language—currents of the 19th century\, recipes\, snippets of poems\, news of children\, the nature of friendship\, love\, art\, longing and grief. \nThe conversation between Emily and Dr. Holland brings to life the ideas\, humor and wisdom of the lifelong relationship between the poet who never married\, the traditional Victorian woman raising a family (Mrs. Holland) and her husband—the renowned writer of his day\, whose newspaper\, The Springfield Daily Republican\, printed the only poems Emily published in her lifetime. \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Belchertown Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

Inimitable voices that have played an integral part of our nation’s history from its earliest formation to the present day. SUMMARY:Fabric of the Revolution Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On June 13 at 10am\, local fiber artist Holly Field will be hosting an activity at the Clapp Memorial Library where participants can make their own copy of George Washington’s headquarters flag\, the Washington Standard. This flag was flown during the Revolutionary War to mark Washington’s position in camp and on the battlefield. During the activity\, participants will dye a Washington Standard of their own using a natural Indigo dye bath to color our flags blue. The cotton fabric we will be using has been pre-treated so that the dye will not stick to the area where the stars are\, creating the star pattern as if by magic when the flag is removed from the dye. The dyeing process can be messy so please dress appropriately. This activity is limited to 18 participants\, ages 10 to adult\, and will take place on the front lawn of the library. Kids under 13 need to be accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:On June 9\, 2026\, join fiber artist Holly Field for a talk about her project “The Fabric of a Revolution: Recreating a 13 Star American Flag.” She will discuss the process of creating a historically accurate 18th century American flag\, and display her finished product. In her talk she will share how her flag was constructed – starting with the raw materials of sheep’s fleece and flax\, then spinning\, weaving\, dyeing\, and finally sewing – as well as the connection to people in American history who would have been involved in these same processes. \nTalk from 7 – 7:30 followed by discussion with the artist until 8pm. SUMMARY:Kinti Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, June 2 at 7pm\, the Clapp Memorial Library will be hosting the musical duo\, Kinti Ensemble. Kinti is named after the Quechua word for hummingbird\, qʼinti\, and\, like their namesake\, builds a bridge between North and South America. Inti Curi Cachimuel is a virtuosic Quichua indigenous musician and composer from Otavalo\, Ecuador with fluidity in a wide range of styles from traditional Andean to jazz. Cellist Rebecca Hartka has always concurrently explored a variety of styles and improvisation. With a strong impulse to connect across cultures\, Hartka was inspired to travel to Cuba and the Yucatán\, Mexico in 2019 and 2020\, where she collaborated with Mayan musicians in concert. The duo has been inspiring audiences since 2021 in a range of venues throughout New England with a unique sound rooted in the music of their Celtic and Andean indigenous ancestors\, as well as original looped and partially improvised compositions inspired by the natural world. This program is funded by the Friends of the Clapp Memorial Library.
